About Melissa

Noella’s founder, Melissa Noel (Mullaney) Jorstad, found her passion for hairstyling when she discovered just how empowering and beautiful it made her clients feel. When a person is styled in a way that accentuates their very best qualities it creates a boost in confidence and self love. Melissa’s goal is for every client to leave her chair feeling this way.

Melissa always knew she would be a business owner. After cosmetology school, she moved to Boston to start her journey first with an Aveda salon in Burlington, MA and then on to Newbury Street. There, she soaked in as much about the industry as she could. Melissa worked styling hair at Boston Fashion Week, photoshoots for Stuff at Night Magazine, various charity events and weddings. She then decided a degree in business was a necessary next step to carrying out her ultimate vision and graduated from The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with a Bachelors degree in Small Business Entrepreneurship.

Melissa continues her hair education by attending classes all over the US and Europe. She has been to Bumble and Bumble Academy New York, Goldwell, Wella Academy Los Angeles, Davines in New York, Oribe in New York, Aveda, and Vidal Sassoon London and Santa Monica. Soon to be added to her resume, Master Colorist and Stylist programs through Goldwell.

With education being so significant, Melissa has written and taught an apprentice program for her former employer James Joseph Salon in Plymouth, MA. She taught new stylists everything from guest services to foiling. Her goal is to never stop learning and teaching, and plans to continue this with her own employees.

Sinead
junior stylist

Why do you do what you do?
I have always been an artistic individual with a passion for creativity. In my adult life I have found hair styling to be an unexpected and amazing outlet that allows me to showcase such creativity in a rewarding way. The ability to transform someone through their hair style is a form of art, and no two people nor their hair are the same. Taking a client’s needs into consideration while simultaneously expressing myself through the process and outcome not only keeps me on my toe's creativity but is also ultimately rewarding for both the client and me.

What motivates you to work?
There is also always more to learn in this industry as it is constantly changing and evolving. With the wide array of possibilities , from working in the intimate setting of a salon one on one with a client, to styling behind the scenes for events as influential as fashion week in Milan or Paris, there are always new things to learn and new opportunities to strive for!

What is your superpower?
My superpower is my strong sense of intuition. I find myself being able to intuitively pick up energy around me whether it be feelings of positivity or distress coming from a person or situation. Being perceptive and naturally in tune, I feel assured in following my gut instincts. This helps me move forward in decision making and problem solving because trusting my intuition provides guidance and allows me to confidently move forward with the choices I make.
